What are you doing to observe it?
Personally, I already work from home (no commute) and although I often run errands by foot or bike, I need some stuff from Earth Fare (WSM is out of my cat food again) so I will try to take to bus down there.
In addition to Chapel Hill Transit which is free every day, all of the buses in the Triangle will be fare-free today, so it's a great time to try out some regional routes.
The new Town Manager of Chapel Hill will be taking the bus to work. How about you?

In another couple of minutes
In another couple of minutes I'm going to ride my bike on over to work.
I know that this isn't the last Friday of September, but I think that there ought to be a Critical Mass ride today.
I took the CHT bus to
I took the CHT bus to downtown CH and then the Robertson Scholars shuttle over to Duke. It adds about 50 minutes to my morning commute so it isn't really practical on a daily basis. However, if the shuttle to Duke ran earlier (it doesn't start until 7:30 AM and I'm usually at work by 7:15 AM) I could read my morning paper on the bus rather than at home and it might work out. However, I doubt there's a reason for students to need a 6:30 AM shuttle so I won't hold my breadth.
The Orange Herald had a
The Orange Herald had a reporter doing rounds today and from what I heard she was unable to find anyone on the buses who was riding for car free day. Then again, the park and ride might not be the best place to do this.
I've been car-free since moving back to NC and into SV.
My wife and I walked out to
My wife and I walked out to Greensboro and took the F route to work. It took 18 minutes to walk out to the stop and about 10 for me to get off the bus at Franklin and Columbia.
Catherine Lazorko got on a little further down the road from us.
Karen walked over to Carrboro Elementary to pick up our daughter and they walked back to Elmo's for dinner, where I joined them after a brief hop on the F bus (this ankle is taking a long time to heal).
We rode the F route up Greensboro and walked back into our neighborhood.
My update on my Car Free Day
My update on my Car Free Day efforts:
As I mentioned in an earlier post, it took me about an extra 50 minutes to get to work (at Duke) coming from Chapel Hill by using CHT and the Robertson Scholars schuttle (as compared to driving). On the return home, it took me an extra 1 and 1/2 hours. The return trip was lengthened because the 4:05 T Route bus ran right past the bus stop at N. Columbia & Rosemary (I assume because it was already filled) and I had to catch the 4:40.
Am I sorry I made the effort: no
Would I do it again soon: no
Do we need an efficient, integrated, regional transit system: yes
Will I continue to push for increased funding for transit services, both in CH and beyond: yes

This is a huge problem, no ability to fill in gaps. I had to pick up my kids at Meadowmont one day and the V bus broke down. Instead of sending another one, they just waited for the other bus to arrive, 45 minutes later or so. Then, it was 15 minutes late. All told, I ended up being way late to pick up the kids. It was that night that I programmed the cab service phone number into my phone. In case I got stuck like that again.
I've had a number of other occasions where the bus showed up 5 minutes early and I missed it, or 10-15 minutes late and because of that I was late.
