OP Candidate Questionnaire: Orange County Board of Commissioners

This election year, we’re doing things a little differently. Instead of holding our usual live online candidate forums, we have asked the candidates for the Orange County Board of Commissioners to complete a brief questionnaire.

(Update: See also our questions for the Orange County school board candidates. — OP Editors)

Below are our questions for the candidates. Starting in a couple of weeks, we will post the candidates’ responses to one question each week here on the blog. In the meantime, how would you answer? Here's a reminder of who's running:

  • At Large (1 seat): Andy Cagle, Matt Hughes, Mark Marcoplos
  • District 1 (2 seats): Jamezetta Bedford, Mark Dorosin, Gary Kahn, Penny Rich
  • District 2 (1 seat): Bonnie Hauser, Renee Price

ORANGEPOLITICS CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE: ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

  1. Why are people poor? What tools or programs is the county using and/or should the county use to address poverty?

  2. Is the allocation of funds in the county’s proposed 2016 bond referendum appropriate? If not, how would you have designed the bond proposal differently?

  3. How would you characterize the relationships between the county and each of our community’s two school districts? In what ways could these relationships be improved?

  4. What is your vision for economic development in Orange County?

  5. With rising home prices, rents, and property taxes, how should the county promote the development of more affordable housing and prevent displacement of lower-income residents?

I like that you're giving more time - I hope we can expect deeper answers because of it.  I hope we allow follow-ups as well if/when they don't really answer the tough ones

I hope you have allowed a whole lot of time!  "Why are people poor?" is a dissertation!!
