OP Candidate Coming Out Party on February 28, 2018

OrangePolitics will hold our semi-annual Candidate Coming Out Party & Happy Hour on Wednesday, February 28th from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at Mystery Brewing in their brewery location (437 Dimmock's Mill Road in Hillsborough).

*Note: We will be at the brewery, not the pub.

Election Information

Three of our county commissioners are up for re-election – one each in District 1, District 2 and At-Large.

Commissioner Mia Burroughs announced that she will not seek reelection next year. Burroughs was elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2014 after serving on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board. She replaced longtime board member Alice Gordon. Former Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board member Jamezetta Bedford has announced that she will file to run for this seat. Bedford also ran for a District 1 seat in 2016.

Commissioner Barry Jacobs (At-Large) and Commissioner Earl McKee (District 2) have said that they will seek re-election.

Four of our Orange County School Board members are up for re-election: Brenda Stephens, Donna Coffey, Michael Hood and Tom Carr.

Filing for the primary runs from February 12th to February 28th at noon. The Primary Election is May 8th, which happens to be the last day of finals at UNC.

The Hillsborough Town Board will be seating a new commissioner this season too, although by appointment. This is to fill the seat being vacated by Brian Lowen. You can see who has filed for the appointment here. Filing ends February 11th at 5 pm.

We will be inviting candidates for Orange County Commissioner, Orange County School Board and Hillsborough Town Board to attend our Candidate Coming Out Party. They will be introduced and you will get a chance to meet them.

Comments

The Facebook invitation for this event suggests that one type of candidate that we can meet is "Soil and Water District Supervisor." As someone who was elected (by large numbers of Durham Co. voters) to that position three times, I'd suggest that you'd want to meet them on the first Friday in July, when filing finally closes for the office.
