OrangePolitics 2017 Online Forum Information

Due to time and capacity constraints, we will only be holding two online candidate forums this election cycle:

  • Sunday, October 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm for the Chapel Hill Town Council candidates. Chris Brook, Legal Director with the NC ACLU, will be moderating.
  • Sunday, October 8th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board candidates. Barbara Fedders, UNC School of Law Professor, will be moderating.

We will be submitting candidate questionnaires to the candidates for Mayor of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough. We will post all answers on this site prior to the start of early voting on October 19th.

We are asking our readers to suggest questions for any of the races. Please share your ideas below in the comments or via Twitter or Facebook.

DACA and Local Schools

I'm back to teaching at CHHS for a long term sub position. The school district just shared this about DACA.

"CHCCS Students, Staff and Families.

President Trump’s recent decision regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has caused a heightened sense of concern for many in our community. There are still unanswered questions and increased anxiety over what the future holds.

Please know, NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN OUR SCHOOLS! Our schools are safe places where children can learn, play and grow. While government leaders debate the legal ramifications and potential appeals, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools remains – as always – committed to the safety and protection of our children.

We continue to welcome everyone, regardless of how they got here. If a student resides within the boundaries of our school district, then we will provide that child with a world-class education. We never ask about the immigration status of a student or family. In fact, we are not allowed to ask, nor do we have any desire for that information.
