Bike and Sidewalk Safety and connectivity

I just sent this to the mayor and council email. Everytime I bike or drive by the ghost bike I promise myself I am going to say something so now or never. The bikepath/sidewalk on the up/north side is officially one way even for the the segment that takes one from the Bolin Creek Greenway to the stop light where one can cross safely to go various directions.  "I am sorry to see that after six months the solution to the accidents near Hillsborough and MLK is a sign saying do not enter. When Bolin Creek Greenway reaches MLK many people will want to ride their bike south to the Hillsborough MLK intersection to go in various directions. It makes no sense to prohibit that movement. If you are worried about the driveways just place warning signs at those points. (Are joggers also prohibited from running that way.) As an aside when our son was young our rule when riding on the sidewalk was to stop, look and walk at all driveways but I do believe it should be the drivers responsibility to make sure it is safe to eneter or leave a drive.

The Mouse that roared.

Tonight at 7:30 at Carrboro High School is the final performance of The Mouse that Roared. It's about the nation of Grand Fenwick that invaded the US and won by capturing the Q-bomb. Originally a cold war book it reminds me of current events of the last 60 years. A theme in the book was the formation of the Tiny Twenty to ban weapons of mass destruction. Lichtenstein, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Mexico, Iceland, Ecuador, Grand Fenwick and others form an alliance and with the threat of the Q-bomb won world peace.  There was even an environmental component: bird watching and preserving the local forest. Hope Chapel Hill and Orange County pass new bonds for Parks and Open Space.

NC Pork Council

Has anyone else been getting phone calls from Karen of the NC Pork Council and also junk mail? We have received two phone calls and one postcard during the past week.  Is some new lobbying effort going into the the state legislature to change rules about hog farms and waste lagoons? Our rural buffer and other rules limit large scale hog farms in Orange County. I hope no one is trying to make things worse.

UNC Centers

Kirk Ross posted some of his thoughts about the recent UNC system center closings. Here are some of his observations:

Although passed by consensus vote, during discussions Tuesday there was a split over the at least some recommendations including one tense exchange over the decision not to close Chapel Hill’s Center for Civil Rights, which is based at the law school.

BOG member Steven Long and Center for Civil Rights director Ted Shaw

BOG member Steven Long said the center was engaging in political activities and said the center’s engagement in school segregation cases in several North Carolina counties was wrong and damaging to the county budgets. Long said he did not think it was right for a part of the university to be engaged in legal actions against the state or local governments.
