Bike and Sidewalk Safety and connectivity

I just sent this to the mayor and council email. Everytime I bike or drive by the ghost bike I promise myself I am going to say something so now or never. The bikepath/sidewalk on the up/north side is officially one way even for the the segment that takes one from the Bolin Creek Greenway to the stop light where one can cross safely to go various directions.  "I am sorry to see that after six months the solution to the accidents near Hillsborough and MLK is a sign saying do not enter. When Bolin Creek Greenway reaches MLK many people will want to ride their bike south to the Hillsborough MLK intersection to go in various directions. It makes no sense to prohibit that movement. If you are worried about the driveways just place warning signs at those points. (Are joggers also prohibited from running that way.) As an aside when our son was young our rule when riding on the sidewalk was to stop, look and walk at all driveways but I do believe it should be the drivers responsibility to make sure it is safe to eneter or leave a drive.

Cold Weather and libraries

Today there was a 2 hour delay for the public schools because of the cold weather. Carl got up at the usual time and walked to Southern Village to see a friend. I biked to the UNC campus and visited the Science Library Annex in Wilson. It's been a while since I have been there. The departamental libraries (Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Geology etc.) have been combined.    A number of books are now in storage including many of the tropical birds books by Alexander Skutch. I was sad to see that many of the paper jounals are gone: the bound volumes of the classical ornithology journals have been discarded. I can't dojournal browsing anymore. (Since I am not a UNC student, I can't access the electronic journals.) I then explored the new eating places on Franklin (and overheard one conversation: room is locked, don't have the key, room mate isn't back with key due to cancelled flights.) The bike ride home was nice and cold. Hope the freeze kills the ticks and zancudos.

Bike to the Future 2

Wow, the Town is really laying on the cheese for this. I got a fancy digital invitation with this punny title, minimal description, and no link to learn more. I have no idea if this is brand new or the culmination of years' work.
