Fair Housing Workshop April 6

A fair housing workshop is coming to Carrboro on Saturday, April 6. EmPOWERment, Inc, the Justice United Affordable Housing Team, and the UNC School of Law Civil Clinic will be co-hosting the event at the Carrboro Century Center, with a morning session from 9:00 am - 11:00 am, and an identical afternoon session from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm.  The workshop will cover the rights of tenants and homeowners under fair housing laws, and will outline basic landlord and tenants rights.

This workshop will add an important dimension to the affordable housing discussion that is underway in the towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill. At the core of this discussion is a question of inclusivity: high housing prices are a serious barrier to ensuring that our community retains a diversity critical to the health of our society. Likewise, discriminatory housing practices and unfair landlords are another serious barrier to homeowners and tenants attempting to buy or rent in Orange County on every point on the price spectrum from subsidized to market rate.

EmPOWERment, Justice United, and the Civil Clinic all have experience working with tenants and homeowners who have been affected by discriminatory housing practices and unfair actions taken by landlords. The fair housing workshop is a response to past cases of discrimination and represents a hopeful path forward towards a more inclusive housing market in our community. The workshop will accomplish the first step in preventing future cases of housing discrimination by ensuring that all tenants and homeowners understand their rights, and the resources available to them if their rights are violated.

We need your help to end discriminatory and unfair housing practices in Orange County. Please spread the word about this important workshop. A bi-lingual  promotional flyer for the workshop will be made available shortly, and will be attached to this post. In the meantime, please save the date for the workshop:
