Seven Apply for School Board Vacancy

Seven people applied for the vacancy on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education created when Michelle Brownstein resigned last month.

Here's the whole list:

  • Allen Buansi, a research consultant with Democracy North Carolina
  • Ashton Powell, a teacher at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics
  • Erika Lipkin, a self-employed CPA
  • Hector Rosario, also a teacher at Science and Math and a doctoral student
  • Joal Hall Broun, director of the Lobbying Compliance Division in the Secretary of State's Office, a 2015 candidate for the board and a former member of the Carrboro Board of Aldermen
  • Mary Ann Wolf, director of digital learning programs at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at N.C. State University
  • Theresa Watson, a 2015 candidate for the board and a 2014 candidate for the Carrboro Board of Aldermen

The complete application packets are available online, and the board will interview the candidates during a meeting on Thursday. I'll be there live tweeting the meeting, so be sure tune into our Twitter account that evening.

I'll also post a Storify of the all my tweets as a comment to this post Friday morning.

As promised, here are the tweets from tonight's meeting. Apologies to the candidates for some of the typos in their names. It was a struggle for me to keep with the rapid fire action!

Joal Hall Broun was selected to fill the seat vacated with Michelle Brownstein resigned from the Board. The voting was in two rounds, with the existing board members first voting for two candidates. Allan Buansi, Joal Hall Broun, and Mary Ann Wolf made it to round two.

Hall Broun will be sworn in on March 3rd.
