Mamas for Obama Celebration Rally Nov. 1 in Chapel Hill

Oct. 15, 2008 – Mothers, their families and friends will turn out for a rally Nov. 1 in Chapel Hill to show support for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. As of yesterday, 323 had already RSVP'd their plans to attend the free public Mamas for Obama Celebration Rally, which will take place from 3-5 p.m. on the Southern Village Green.

The Chapel Hill rally is one of 13 planned nationwide as part of a Moms for Obama National Rally Day, with volunteer-organized rallies to occur simultaneously across the country. It is the only rally scheduled in the Southeast Atlantic region.

Confirmed speakers at the Chapel Hill event include:
-Stella Adams, former executive director of the North Carolina Fair Housing Center in Durham;
-Alethea Gerding, a Naval Academy graduate who lives in Chapel Hill;
-Carrboro Alderwoman Jacquelyn Gist;
-Linda Goodliffe, Chair of Veterans for Obama in Cabarrus County;
-N.C. State Rep. Verla Insko;
-N.C. State Sen. Ellie Kinnaird;
-Ricardo Velasquez, organizer of Durham Latinos for Obama.

Free music will be provided courtesy of the Chapel Hill rock trio Velvet and Pittsboro musician Mark Holland with his blues rock band Jule Brown.

Event organizers are creating and selling "Mama for Obama" and "My Mama is for Obama" t-shirts. Sales have already netted approximately $1,000 to cover rally costs, said Jennifer Schmidt, a Chapel Hill mother who heads up the t-shirt project. Last month, she co-organized a local bake sale that brought in $1,800 for the Obama campaign.
