Carrboro Police
Amid recent police killings, in the time of COVID-19, there are renewed calls for community safety changes including defunding the police, reforms such as the 8 Can't Wait Movement and abolition. Here's a run down of recent local responses.
Officer D here; this is my first post on Orange Politics!
For those of you who don't know me, I'm a member of the Carrboro Police Department's Community Services Division. One of my primary assignments is to create, organize and complete Community Oriented Policing (COPS) initiatives. Our current major COPS initiatives are the Police Department Open House (next event--June 22nd from 6:30 PM to 8 PM) and the Citizen's Police Academy (September 10th, all day). Current ongoing initiatives are Coffee with the Cops, Kava with the Cops, Neighborhood Forums, Pizza with the Police and other similar events.
I'll be periodically posting officer profiles, announcing major events and attempting to keep people posted on what's going on with the Carrboro Police Department!

In light of national struggles with policing methods, enforcement and militarization, both Chapel Hill and Carrboro police departments hosted sessions for community members to voice their potential concerns directly to Chapel Hill Police Chief Blue Oct. 4 and Carrboro Chief Horton Oct. 5. The two forums revealed underlying issues in each community, with Carrboro’s discussion especially distinct in the way it gravitated toward racial profiling issues.
On October 6, the Town of Carrboro will hold a community forum on policing in Carrboro. The public is invited to bring questions and/or comments for Police Chief Walter Horton, Town Manager David Andrews, members of the Board of Aldermen, and other Town employees regarding policing in Carrboro. Attendees can expect to:
- learn what kinds of policing issues are of concern to different people in our community;
- gain insights into Carrboro’s current approaches to policing;
- raise and consider ideas for how policing here can best reflect Carrboro’s values; and
- open or improve channels of communication so that the conversation can continue.
