I used to think that getting paid is what differentiated The Media from blogs, but I'm increasingly not so sure about this. For example, WCHL uses a large number of unpaid interns as news reporters, and now they want some lucky "winner" to provide voice talent to promote their new FM signal.
If you think YOU have the perfect voice for radio, then this is the contest for you!
Click on the "Scripts" tab above, follow the links to download and print the three scripts, record yourself reading all three scripts in the best BIG FM RADIO voice you can, and submit the file (as either an MP3 or a Video File) through the submissions tab.
The winner receives the opportunity to record commercials and radio spots to be aired on 97.9 FM WCHL and a $100 gift card to a local restaurant!
I am imgaine the reason this is so short (one hour) is that there isn't much to ask the challengers besides "who the **** do you think you are?" and then thank Mark Kleinschmidt for his service and polite patience with these bozos. Here's my favorite part of WCHL's story about this:

This year, WCHL tried something different and involved a panel of community members (including myself) in developing the ideas for what topics to cover and what guests to invite for the annual Community Forum. I haven't seen a full list of what is proposed, but I think it was a useful process and I applaud WCHL for taking a step toward a more participatory Forum.

Last week the upstanding Greater Chapel Hill Association of Realtors* announced they were endorsing realtor Joe Phelps for at-large County Commissioner (as well as farmer Earl McKee in district 2). How in-depth was the research behind this endorsement? They didn't even look at the other candidates.
The association said neither Jacobs nor Broun approached them about an endorsement.
“If we had been, we would have met with them and listened to their views,” Zimmerman said.

Also this year, we are returning to our roots and presenting ten topics in ten hours. Below are this year’s topics and panelists who are scheduled to appear (a few others are still awaiting confirmation).
For those not familiar with the "WCHL Community Forum", it iso ur most anticipated single day of broadcasting of the year. The tradition of delving into and focusing on issues facing our community started many years ago… and brings together points of view of government officials, community leaders and citizens.
I hope you will be a part of the day by by sending in your questions.
Several of the OP regulars will be guests on WCHL as they cover the election results tomorrow. Tune in to hear the dulcet tones and considered opinions of Mark Marcoplos, Fred Black, Tom Jensen, Nancy Oates, and yours truly. You are also encouraged to call in with your own comments and analysis at 929-9245.

The plan is to have a pre-election result conversation: rehashing of the election season, discussion of issues facing both Carrboro and Chapel Hill, overview of candidates and respective platform, and action plan for the newly elected officials. Then a discussion and analysis of the election results, as they come in, followed by a post-election wrap up.
The conversation will be lead by Ron Stutts and Community Government Reporter Elizabeth Friend.
We have invited commentators that we feel will provide a balanced discussion [...] We welcome lively and respectful discussion that best represents topics and opinions that have been discussed within the community.

Last Wednesday, Oct 28, Henry Lister did a commentary on WCHL about the upcoming election for Chapel Hill mayor and council. He named no candidates; rather he described the election as a choice. The choice is between our legacy, i.e., two centures of conscious decisions that have resulted in our becoming a world-class center of education and health care, versus those who are primarily concerned with lowering property taxes. I think Henry did a great job. Here is his commentary:
The upcoming election in Chapel Hill is NOT about money. We face a dangerous election next week. Several vocal and well-funded candidates are running platforms promising to reduce homeowner taxes by developing more commercial taxes, some just because they think that’s what voters want to hear. But framing this election about money does us all a dis-service and shifts the focus from our real goal, which is to continue Chapel Hill’s legacy.
Just saw this message on Twitter:
WCHL has sold minority ownership in the company to Barry Leffler, currently the General Manager of NBC-17 (WNCN-TV).
More details are available on the WCHL site, including "Leffler will assume the roles of CEO and Managing Partner with Heavner continuing as Chairman." Leffler is leaving NBC17 and plans to buyout all of WCHL.
What does it mean for the community? More or less resources for WCHL? What about local coverage, Air America shows, and CBS headlines? (And do we care about all of those things?)
