Hello and welcome to this brand-new effort to help local residents get more informed and engaged in the civic life of southern Orange County. In addition to regular postings by local activists on a variety of issues, listed below are some other resources we might offer at this site. Please add your own comments and let us know what you think, make suggestions, etc.

  • weekly or monthly polls on local issues
  • listing of local elected officials (possibly with profiles or short bios)
  • listserv to announce major updates and events
  • calendar of local events (eg: forums)
  • host monthly meet-ups

Are we safe yet?

The Chapel Hill Herald reports that the Town's red light camera program, instituted almost a month ago, has brought in $2 to the Town and $48 to Affiliated Computer Systems, the company that runs the program. That is to say one person has been caught running a light and paid the $50. There was no community outcry about the scourge of red-light-runners before this program was instituted. It was sold as a revenue producer for the town.

This 12-page letter from Chapel Hill resident Will Raymond (PDF) highlights many of the problems with red light cameras. The Town has requested a response from ACS.

C.A.N. Forum

Until I get a proper calendar of events thing on here, we'll post campaign events under the "Elections" topic.

The Community Action Network will hold a candidate forum on Wednesday, October 1, at Chapel Hill Town Hall. (Recently changed from September 30 due to a conflict.) The schedule for the evening is:

7:00 -- Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education
8:10 -- Carrboro Mayor and Board of Aldermen
9:20 -- Chapel Hill Mayor and Town Council

It will also be cablecast on Time-Warner Channel 18.

UNC delaying Carolina North report

Members of Chapel Hill's Horace Williams Advisory Commitee were notified last week that the University is postponing the release of their current plans for Carolina North for "about 6-7 weeks." The report that was scheduled to be released this week is now expected to be made public in late November. The reason stated is that they simply aren't ready and want more time to work on the plan. I can't help but wonder what other factors might be at work. Anyone care to comment?
