Fearrington Democratic Rally
The Fearrington Democratic Club invites residents of Fearrington Village, Galloway Ridge, Chatham and Orange County to a Democratic Rally in the Fearrington Barn October 21, 2008. Come meet and hear your Democratic elected officials running for election or re-election. The social period runs from 6:30-7:15 PM with a cash bar service. There will be short election of officers for the Fearrington Democratic Club at 7:15 and then we will hear from US Rep.
I know as a long time observer of campaign finance issues, it is rare that a major corporate political action committee gives to an incumbent’s opponent in a primary. So I noted with interest that Duke Energy’s PAC gave Senator Ellie Kinnaird’s opponent $2000 in this primary. Ellie was the only state senator to vote against Senate Bill 3 which, although sold as renewable energy bill, was hijacked by the utilities so that it shifted most of the financial risk for building new coal and nuclear plants to the ratepayers.
Ellie saw this bill clearly for what it was, spoke out strongly against it, and clearly incurred the wrath of Duke Energy. As Democracy NC found in its research, in the four years ending in 2006, Duke Energy and Progress Energy averaged investments of $10,000 per North Carolina legislator in campaign contributions and lobbying expenditures.
It doesn’t work with our good senator. She represents us instead. Let’s keep it that way.

The Town of Chapel Hill passed a Development Plan for UNC's Central Campus in 2001 under the OI-4 zoning ordinance. Two modifications have been requested and granted since that time.
Now UNC has submitted Development Plan Modification No. 3. This proposal includes over a million square feet of additional buildings on campus.
The Question for Chapel Hill: More pollution and greenhouse gas emissions or More use of solar power and energy efficiency at UNC?
WHAT: Chapel Hill Town Council public hearing and probable vote on upgrading the UNC coal plant.
WHEN: Monday evening, November 21st. 7 PM
WHERE: Chapel Hill Town Hall, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd (formerly Airport Rd.)
WHY BE THERE: UNC is asking the Chapel Hill Town Council to permit the "upgrade of their power generation capabilities" at its coal plant. While UNC's co-generation plant is more efficient than most coal-burning power plants, the university admits that it expects to burn more coal at the plant than it does now. Burning more coal will produce more pollution and greenhouse gases. The university has not presented data on whether it could better meet its electricity demand by increasing the energy efficiency of UNC buildings and increasing its use of solar energy.
