The Chapel Hill and Carrboro downtowns are vibrant spaces where you can find good food, great music, art, lectures, run into friends and jump on a Chapel Hill Transit bus for free. Why Chapel Hill Doesn’t Have More Startups, in One Chart

In early 2015, UNC-Chapel Hill released an extensive report about the business startups and spinoffs that faculty, students, and alumni have created. This report quantifies the impact of these businesses: 150+ businesses, 8,000 jobs created, and $7 billion in annual revenue for the state of North Carolina.

But what this report doesn’t detail is the direct impact of these startups and spinoffs on our local economy here in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Orange County. There’s a pretty simple reason for that: Few startups coming out of UNC stay in our community.  So why can’t Chapel Hill foster a local startup scene when other college towns, like Boulder and Cambridge, have gotten national attention for the startup economies they’ve developed in their own communities?

Parking in Carrboro

After reading yet another article about the parking "problem" in downtown Carrboro/Chapel Hill, I thought it'd be worth revisiting solutions to this problem. (Or maybe non-problem, I've never had trouble parking in either town, so I don't really know what people are talking about, unless their definition of parking is parking within a  1/10th mile of the business/restaurant they wish to visit).

Rosemary Imagined Process - Next Steps

The Rosemary Imagined Neighborhood Project Team, which is helping guide the process for the Town of Chapel Hill and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, met again on November 1, 2013 to discuss next steps for the development of a Rosemary Street Concept. We were given a summary of the feedback that has been garnered from the process so far.

Chapel Hill's Dwight Bassett makes the case for economic development

Yesterday at noon, Chapel Hill's Economic Development Officer Dwight Bassett provided a brief, one-hour presentation outlining some key facts and developments concerning retail, housing, and office space in Chapel Hill. The full presentation can be viewed here.

CVS submits plans for large store in Old Carrboro

As reported in our local newspapers (see here & here), CVS has submitted plans to the town of Carrboro to build a large CVS and parking lot on the corner of N. Greensboro St. &  Weaver St.  This development would demolish at least 2 historic buildings, cut down many trees, create more traffic problems and the parking lot would be placed on a residential street.

Downtown Public Forum

Please join the Town of Chapel Hill and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership in providing input into the planning process for the future of Downtown Chapel Hill. The sessions are open to property owners, businesses, residents and anyone interested in Downtown's future to meet with the consultants and share ideas and suggestions for Downtown Chapel Hill. 

 

Thursday, April 8

8:30 to 10:00 AM and 4:30 to 6:00 PM

Both sessions will be held in the second floor Great Room at the Top of the Hill Restaurant. The entrance is on the south side of East Franklin St., between Walgreens and Game Stop.     

The Town and Partnership have hired the Raleigh based consultant Kling-Stubbins to help craft a Development Framework and Action Plan Document which will help guide the Town and the development community five to eight years into the future.  Kling-Stubbins has partnered with Stewart Engineering and Strategy 5 economic development consulting to assist with the Plan.  The documents' primary thrust will be to identify strategic properties in downtown, suggest potential uses for the property and, with the approval of current or future owners, present a means to achieve the jointly developed plan for these strategic parcels.

University Square Public Meetings

In July, the University’s Chapel Hill Foundation Real Estate Holdings Inc. purchased the 12-acre University Square and Granville Tower property in downtown Chapel Hill.  Cousins Properties Incorporated, a developer that specializes in mixed use projects, is partnering with the Foundation to redevelop the property.  On Thursday, October 15, the University and Cousins Properties will host two public meetings to discuss the redevelopment.   

The meetings will be at 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in Suite 133-G of University Square, next to Ken’s Quickie Mart.  Although the first meeting is primarily for tenants of University Square, you are invited to attend either meeting.  The same material will be presented at both. 

Parking is available on site. Chapel Hill Transit service is available via most routes.

Cousins Properties recently selected Elkus Manfredi Architects of Boston to help plan and design the project.  At the meeting, the development teams from Cousins and Elkus Manfredi will share their process and initial analysis of the property and ask for your input on the redevelopment. Public input will guide the architects as they develop a concept plan to be submitted to the Town next spring.
