US Senate

Kay Hagan is a Democrat?

I'm appalled with our 'D' senator in 2 distinctly dismal ways this afternoon.

First, Hagan votes to legalize the military to snatch and indefinitely detain anyone accused of being a scary 'terrorist.'  Specifically, no lawyer will be allowed for anyone so accused.  Also, this authorizes military actions within the US (um, posse comitatus? anyone?)  This includes US citizens like me and you, dear reader.  (Note this bill will extend to the military this unconstitutional priviledge currently only enjoyed by the president.)

Former Senator Jesse Helms dead at 86

How will he be remember in our community?

For me, I will never forget what he was willing to do to win an election.

MOVEON NC MEMBERS TO DEMAND SENATORS DOLE AND BURR STOP SPENDING ON ENDLESS WAR AND FOCUS ON ISSUES AT HOME

WILL RELEASE NEW REPORT: NORTH CAROLINA VOTERS SEE ENDING THE IRAQ WAR AS BEST WAY TO HELP LOCAL ECONOMY

April 21, 2008 - Chapel Hill/ Carrboro - On Thursday, April 24, members of MoveOn.org Political Action in Chapel Hill/Carrboro will release a new report, "Iraq and Recession". The report focuses on groundbreaking poll numbers that show that voters in North Carolina believe that the billions of dollars a week spent on Iraq war should be invested in economic priorities at home.

“Senator Elizabeth Dole and Senator Richard Burr have consistently voted with the President to spend half-trillion dollars on this endless war in Iraq, while ignoring the mounting economic pressures of voters here in North Carolina. The billions per week we’re spending there could be invested in our faltering economy here at home,” said Sarah Nixon local MoveOn member. “It’s time to bring our troops home and use those same dollars for the priorities of most Americans--health care, clean energy, and job creation--to help those hurt by the impending recession.”

A Chapel Hillian to challenge Dole?

I know I'm late to the party on this one (sometimes I actually have to work instead of reading blogs all day) but how about this report in the Carrboro Citizen that Jim Neal of Chapel Hill is going to run against Elizabeth Dole next year? I've only heard a few other names tossed around, such as state legislators Grier Martin (D.G.'s son) and Kay Hagan, but I think Dole's a sitting duck.

I've never heard of him before, but Kirk says Neal is "a key Democratic Party fundraiser," so does that mean he's for real? Discuss.

Update: On another thread David Beck posted a link to an N & O story that tells us Neal is 50 and an investment banker.
