Over the last two years, Orange County Justice United has been working with renters to address discrimination and wrongs they have faced as tenants. These efforts spurred Justice United to work with renters in our community and the UNC Civil Law Clinic to develop the Declaration of Tenants' Rights and Responsibilities. The document, available in both English and Spanish, outlines renters' rights based on state statutes.
Justice United and renters from our community have asked the Towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill and Orange County to endorse this Declaration and help to distribute it to all tenants in their municipalities. More details can be found in this article in the Chapel Hill News.
A fair housing workshop is coming to Carrboro on Saturday, April 6.
EmPOWERment, Inc, the Justice United Affordable Housing Team, and the
UNC School of Law Civil Clinic will be co-hosting the event at the
Carrboro Century Center, with a morning session from 9:00 am - 11:00 am,
and an identical afternoon session from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm. The
workshop will cover the rights of tenants and homeowners under fair
housing laws, and will outline basic landlord and tenants rights.
The Justice United Foreclosure Team,
the Centre for Homeownership, and the UNC School of Law will be
co-hosting the workshop. This event is targeted towards homeowners who
are at risk of foreclosure. Topics to be addressed will include the
foreclosure process and ways that homeowners can avoid foreclosure.
