On Wednesday...

Guest Post by Steve Sherman

Thrilled that Kerry won, and that massive mobilizations of people triumphed over a hideous campaign and desperate voter suppression efforts?

Bummed that Bush won, and ready to tell him we aren't going away?

Ready to make sure this time that we don't stand silently by while the Supreme Court overrules the American electorate?

Come out to the Franklin Street Post Office on Wednesday, November 3rd at 5pm, and join us as we celebrate or mourn and pressure Kerry or Bush (or Nader or Badnarik) to listen to the voices of the global multitude.

Additionally, if it becomes evident that this election has been stolen or tampered with, we will be participating in a nationwide call for direct actions throughout the day, with the Wednesday rally an opportunity for mass direct action.

Bring any and all noisemakers (drums, pots, pans, etc): we will not be silent.

I've heard a rumor that a statue of our current Commander-in-Thief may be toppled, but I can't say for certain.

This will be a permitted rally. A spokescouncil meeting will take place at 1 PM on the 3rd on the Graham Memorial Terrace at UNC, and we are encouraging people to form affinity groups and have a representative on the spokescouncil. To join in the planning email Liz, liz.masondeese@gmail.com

The protest is bigger than who won or lost the election, because when any politician wins we all lose. It is a protest against empire.

There may be some hope yet for Todd Melet. He attended this rally and even took a lot of nice pictures. Check them out on his blog and let him know what you think.

thanks for posting that link, ruby! todd's comments are laughable but the pictures are great!

Todd attended not out of support, but out of interest in the situation. He saw comedy in the making.

Only idiots would want to move to Canada to get healthcare. Sure if you want to pay >70% income tax. To all those that want to move to Canada, please go. Nothing gets accomplished by making a lot of noise with megaphones and holding up signs. If you weren't happy with Bush, you should have done more to convert people to the Left. Now you get to hold crybaby meetings since you didn't get your way.

The Supreme Court did not "overrule the American electorate." They put a futile attempt to steal the election in it's place. Regardless which party you're affiliated with you should realize that multiple recounts are not the answer. If you cannot use a freaking ballot you aren't smart enough to vote. I can't believe people are still whining about this. It's rediculous.

"Join us as we celebrate or mourn and pressure Kerry or Bush (or Nader or Badnarik) to listen to the voices of the global multitude."?? The global multitude does not matter. They are not Americans, they don't get to vote, and they shouldn't be able to. America has spoken, and they wanted Bush. Time to move on. You want to focus your anger? Work on who will run in 2008. Define your strategy. Don't sit around and mourn, it does not accomplish anything.

I hope you guys can have a huge impact on selecting a candidate for 2008. Further to the left, the better. While Kerry appeared to be the most liberal Senator of all, we know he was not nearly liberal enough for this crowd. This crowd mourned the defeat of Howierd Dean and Kantwinamuch in the primaries.

Guys, work hard over the next 1500 days to find a candidate more liberal than Hillary. Bring it on! We can't wait. Harder you folks work, the fewer tiny blue specs there will be on this map in 2008 http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/vote2004/countymap.htm

It must suck to deal with such a reality.

"They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no head; it will produce no flour. Were it to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it up."

"As of Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at least 1,123 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. "

"A report in Thursday's Los Angeles Times quotes soldiers who said Iraqi looters raided the Al-Qaqaa weapons dump shortly after the April 2003 fall of Baghdad while outnumbered U.S. guards simply watched, according to The Associated Press."

"A report by the group Human Rights Watch said on Thursday that "crucial evidence" that might be used to prosecute Saddam Hussein and others "has likely been lost or seriously tainted" because U.S.-led forces "failed to safeguard documents" and the remains of bodies in mass graves."

" Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar held near its lowest in almost nine months versus the euro in London on concern a bigger Republican majority in the U.S. Congress will allow the president to extend tax cuts, widening the budget deficit.

President George W. Bush's re-election may also bring increased bond sales to fund spending on Iraq, adding to concern demand for U.S. assets will slow. The dollar fell 21 percent on the Federal Reserve's Trade-Weighted Major Currency Dollar Index since Bush first took office in January 2001. "

The Democratic Party needs to look at WHERE Bush won and WHY Bush won. I hate to admit that Todd has a point (he makes his points insuch UNattractive ways) but he DOES have a point. Kerry "didn't play" in the SOuth and most of the Midwest. (Though, curiously, he did well in Illinois. Don't know if he "played in Peoria...couldn't find a breakdown of the vote in my quick Google search.)

Unless the Dems can figure out how to bring Kansas, Ohio, Indiana, etc. "back into the fold" they are in trouble.

I will say this--it's tough to win a campaign if your chief draw is that your candidate "isn't Bush." And, according to exit polls (for what THEY are worth) 70% of the people who voted for Kerry claimed they were ACTUALLY voting AGAINST Bush.

Things to think about...

Todd, Matt--gloating is NEVER attractive. Any more than whining is...

Melanie

The map I had linked to above http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/vote2004/countymap.htm shows the county by county breakdown of votes nationwide. The tiny blue specs are what Kerry won.

Melanie,

I didn't mean to appear gloating. I was just trying to point out a few things that seemed to stick out. Sure I'm happy the candidate I pulled for won, but I TRY not to rub others nose in it.

Of course there are always exceptions - whiners are fair gaime.

Interesting. Kerry DID "play in Peoria."

Thanks Todd.

Matt--Fair enough.
