Cindy Sheehan in town on Saturday

Rally with Cindy Sheehan & Sami Rasouli

Saturday, April 21, 2007
7:00pm - 9:00pm
McCorkle Place (North Quad) The Pit on Campus

Eyewitnesses to the occupation and peacemaking efforts in both Iraq and the USA to speak on campus on Saturday, April 21st.

Sami Rasouli sold his restaurant in Minneapolis in 2004 to return to Iraq to help rebuild his native country. As a Shia, Mr. Rasouli helped with the rebuilding of Sunni Fallujah after US occupation forces leveled much of the city. It was there that Mr. Rasouli founded the Muslim Peacemakers Teams, building bridges across sectarian lines toward a more hopeful future.

Cindy Sheehan lost her soldier son Casey, who was killed in Baghdad on April 4, 2004. Since then, Ms. Sheehan has founded Gold Star Families for Peace and made news world wide when she began Camp Casey outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford Texas. She demanded to know for what noble purpose her son was killed. The president refused to speak with her. Cindy Sheehan has become an icon for the peace movement, and stirs audiences everywhere she goes.

Their speaking engagement at 7:00pm Saturday on McCorkle Place (the North Quad) on the UNC Chapel Hill campus is sponsored by Students for a Democratic Society, Grassroots Impeachment Movement, Progressive Democrats of America 4th Congressional District, and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

Saturday's appearances headline a 2 day series of speaking events in Asheville, Greensboro and the Triangle.

Please keep your comments personal and/or local, thanks!

Thanks, Mark!

Ms. Sheehan has had to cancel her appearance in Chapel Hill. Here's the updated schedule I received earlier today.

PEACE IN THE PIT

Saturday, April 21st, 7 p.m

People on the frontlines of peacemaking in Iraq and North Carolina will bring updates at Peace in the Pit program near the UNC Student Union.

Sami Rasouli sold his Minneapolis restaurant in 2004 to return and rebuild his native Iraq. Mr. Rasouli, a Shiite, helped the Sunnis in Fallujah begin the heartbreaking process of rebuilding their city after US forces had leveled it. Mr. Rasouli set up Muslim Peacemakers Teams to build bridges across sectarian lines for a more hopeful future for his homeland.

Rev. Curtis Gatewood, a longtime NAACP leader, was one of the first recognized Southern leaders to oppose the Bush/Cheney Invasion of Iraq. Rev. Gatewood was criticized by National NAACP leadership for his stand but, within less than a year, they reversed themselves and now the National and State NAACP are leading the fight against the occupation of Iraq. Rev. Gatewood recently was the chief organizer for “H K on J,” where the NAACP and 70 partner organizations brought over 4,000 people to Raleigh to begin to take back our government from the money-changers. He helped author the People's Agenda so it is no accident Point 14 is: “Bring the Troops Home Now."

The David Price 6. Cong. David Price's office called police and had 6 SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) members arrested in February as they petitioned Price to cut off funding for the war. They were arrested for trespassing within 30 minutes. They will be tried on May 7th in the courtroom at the Chapel Hill Post Office.

The Red Clay Ramblers, North Carolina's own band, will play. Dean Smith says he likes “Two kinds of music: jazz and the Red Clay Ramblers.”

The event is part of a statewide effort this weekend to inform North Carolinians about the criminal acts of the Bush/Cheney administration. Mr. Rasouli speaks at UNC-Asheville on Friday. He is joined by impeachment activist Cindy Sheehan at a noon to 4:00 pm Saturday program at the Federal Plaza in Greensboro, sponsored by The World Can't Wait—Drive out the Bush Regime. Ms. Sheehan lost her soldier son Casey, who was killed in Baghdad on April 4, 2004. She founded Gold Star Families for Peace, set up Camp Casey outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford Texas, demanded to know “for what noble purpose her son was killed,” and the president refused to meet with her. Cindy Sheehan's courage and commitment is legendary in the peace movement. She originally planned to participate in the “Peace in the Pit” program in Chapel Hill, but has been forced to return to California to help build support for Impeachment in the California Legislature. A Thank You Cindy card will be signed at the Pit and sent to her from the peace movement of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

The Chapel Hill event is sponsored by Students for a Democratic Society, the Grassroots Impeachment Movement, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Elders for Peace, and Progressive Democrats of America, 4th Cong. District.

NBC17 said Cindy is going to be at UNC - has there been a change of plans?

I read in the paper this morning that she will not be at UNC.

On Wednesday night at 9:00 pm, Bill Moyers Journal (UNC-TV) will premier a program on Buying the War: How Did the Mainstream Press Get It So Wrong.
