Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Announces Process for School Board Vacancy

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools today announced the process for filling the vacancy on the Board of Education resulting from the resignation of Michelle Brownstein.

So far, we've heard only that 2015 school board candidate and former Carrboro alderperson Joal Hall Broun intends to apply for the vacancy.

North Carolina statute requires the vacancy to be filled by appointment by the remaining members of the board until the next election of board members. Applications for the vacancy are due in the superintendent's office by noon on February 5th. The school board will interview candidates on February 11th and make the appointment on February 18th.

The application notes the following qualities of "successful candidates":

  • Professional and/or volunteer experience in the schools or in education, preferably in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools;
  • Experience as a volunteer in the community with priority given to programs thatpositively affect children and families;
  • Experience on non-profit boards, elected boards or similar leadership teams; 
  • Flexibility to attend meetings and perform the work expected of a school boardmember;
  • Knowledge of existing and planned programs in CHCCS or the willingness to acquire such knowledge;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Other skills or experiences of value to the school board.

All applicants will be expected to answer the questions below and provide letters of recommendation.

  3. What unique skills or experiences would you bring to the School Board?
  4. What have you done to help public schools?

  7. What experience do you have in the community, especially with educational programs?
  8. What do you believe are the five greatest challenges facing the CHCCS systemand how would you address each?
  9. How will you adjust your schedule to allow you to fulfill the time commitment of serving as a Board member?
  10. What are your thoughts on the upcoming school bond referendum?
  11. How do you work with people who disagree with you?
  12. Describe your leadership background and how it influences your policy making?
