Solarize Carrboro: kickstarting home solar

Remember when getting solar power for your home was either too expensive or too complicated? Well, times have changed. The price of solar panels has dropped more than 80% in the past five years. Locally, solar has zoomed ahead and North Carolina ranks 5th in the Nation in solar installations.

All this growth has brought about new ways to get solar power at your home. The non-profit Solarize Carrboro project brings together bulk discounts, affordable financing, and a streamlined process to make it easy for you to go solar. One of the goals of the project is to help you take advantage of all the incentives out there so you can get solar power for less than what you are paying your utility. Similar Solarize projects have been successfully sponsored by Town governments in Asheville, Seattle and Portland, and resulted in hundreds of new  home solar installations.

The first step is a petition to the Town of Carrboro to participate in Solarize Carrboro and to commit to streamlining the residential permitting process. You can sign our petition at www.solarizenc.org/carrboro.

With all the dysfunction at the State and National level it is easy to be cynical these days, but here is a way we can work with our Town to get the electricity we need in a way that is local, sustainable, and affordable. Even if you don't live in Carrboro, please consider signing the petition to let us know you would like us to bring affordable solar power to your area as well.

Thanks!
