A Prayer for Chatham

According to the N&O Chatham regularly invokes Jesus prior to its Commissioner meetings. Bunky is saying Jesus taught him to pray, Outz says non-christians can leave the room, Emerson says his Jewish friends don't care...do you?

"I always thought if they didn't like [the prayer], they could step outside," Commissioner Carl Outz said.

"I talked to a Jewish person about it, and he had no problem with the Lord's Prayer," Emerson said. The Lord's Prayer begins, "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name."

Doesn't seem like a very friendly and welcoming place to me. So, who wants to go to the next commissioner's meeting?

Perhaps Chatham voters will tell Outz that HE should leave the room.

I am sitting here studying for a Constitutional Law exam on monday morning, and i hope that there is a question as easy as this on it. It is wrong and offensive in all sorts of ways.

God Help Us!
Another example of trying to hide slime behind Jesus.
The Chatham board must not be familar with Jesus's instructions that we go inside and close the door to pray rather praying in public to draw attention to ourselves.Jesus had Bunky's number!

Matthew 6:5-6: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men....when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret...."

How about a religious revival at Bunkey's Silk Hope house?

Reminds me of the old Jerry Jeff Walker durge, "Will There Be Any Up In Heaven?" Perfect Bunkey theme.

You'll have to give Bunkey plenty of notice to be there, Mark. It's a long drive.

Remember, Chatham folks: Lucier, Thompson, Vanderbeck.

Just heard about a full page ad in the Chatham Record supporting Bunkey's re-election that says he's standing up to the ACLU's push to get God out of Chatham. Headed down to Starpoint this am to get a copy.

I thought God actually lived in a McMansion in Wake.

I've always been conflicted about this kind of issue. In first grade I actually stood up and objected to the Lord's Prayer and got sent to the Principal's office for a talking to. But I learned soon thereafter that I was a religious minority and chose not to complain publicly again. But to suggest that Jews "have no problem" with the Lord's Prayer may only indicate that the person Outz talked to simply did not want to make waves.

To clarify, I was in first garde when there were still prayers said at the beginning of the day in public school (1956). I was also one of 2 people in my class of 33 who was for Stevenson (everyone else was for Ike)

While I find Bunky and his ilk irritating--I find myself wondering how this pertains toORANGE County politics? This isn't a WalMart that is going to cause more traffic for us...it's for the people of Chatham County to decide on. As to going down for the next meeting--remember how irritated many of us were when the out-of-town folk came to the town council meeting on same-sex marriage? http://orangepolitics.org/2005/03/live-from-town-hall/#comments
