Change Rocks concert for Barack Obama

Date:

Friday, May 2, 2008 - 10:00am to 1:00pm

Location:

Carrboro Town Commons

It doesn't say clearly whether he'll be there in person. If he is, the turnout will be way more than 4,000. Maybe I'll the day off work on May 2nd...

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen approved a request from the local Barack Obama campaign staff to use the Town Commons at 301 W. Main St. for a rally and to encourage early, one-stop voter registration during the afternoon of May 2.

The Obama campaign plans to have several local bands play at the rally. It expects about 4,000 people, but Capt. Joel Booker of the Carrboro Police Department said the rally could easily become larger than that.

Seriously, good idea to do it right next the early voting site at Town Hall.

Comments

I'm thinking this event might be a good oportunity to promote OrangePolitics to local progressives who might not know much about local issues. Anyone want to come to this event and help me spread the word?

I've created an event on Facebook to make it easy to share.

Maybe I'll get more stickers printed...

I will be there volunteering ( I think--waiting on the word from the office) but either way, would also love to spread the word about OP. Sign me UP!

Thanks for volunteering. Unfortunately we don't have your contact info. If you could get in touch with us, we'd love to confirm. Please see below for info on volunteering at the Change Rocks Rally:

Obama for America Chapel Hill needs your help! We're recruiting volunteers for this Friday's Change Rocks concert with Arcade Fire and Superchunk. Tickets sold out quickly, so volunteering is your best bet to get into the concert if you didn't get a ticket in advance.

If you can volunteer at the concert this Friday from 11 am-5 pm, please send your name, cell phone number, and email address to Carole Bell, email: cvbell@gmail.com or call Obama Chapel Hill HQ at 919.929.3460 or cell no. 619.5918.

Currently active Obama volunteers get first dibs, but we do need lots of help!
The concert takes place at the Carrboro Town Commons.

THANKS

Just learned that the bands playing are Superchunk and Arcade Fire. That's pretty cool (especially, you know, for The Kids)!

Can you pick up more than one ticket per person? I won't be in town for a bit, and I would like someone to pick one up for me when they pick up theirs. Is there a limit per person?
Tickets are required. Tickets are free, but only one ticket may be picked up person. Space is limited and admission is on a first come, first serve basis. The show is for all ages.

"but only one ticket may be picked up person"  I’m assuming they mean PER person.  Too bad, I'm definitely going to be picking up a ticket, prob at the balloon place near Aki-Hana.  Maybe I buy some groucho glasses while I’m at the store and slip back in and get one for the wife :-)

Someone just sent me this link. Looks like the work of a great volunteer. http://barackchapelhill.com/

The camapign is now clear that this more of a concert (ie: no candidate) than a rally.  Full info on places to get tickets is here: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/officialevent/43h2

I think they are going to give out unlimited tickets, but may still limit the number of people who can get in. The organiztionof this whole thing is not impressive. Feels more like they are trying to trick us into voting than empower or energize us.

There was a long line at Ballons & Tunes this morning, but I'm sure you can probably stroll right up and get a ticket now.

Yes, they sure could have been more clear on what was happening.  Why waste time this morning standing in line for tickets when the REAL line will be next Friday when 1 million ticket holders decend on Carrboro!
There was already a parking problem this morning for just the few hundred people waiting for tickets. It is important to get the word out for 5/2 for folks to use bike, ped, bus, or park & ride.
Both Mayor Foy and Mayor Chilton endorsed Obama along with 41 other NC mayors. (BTW, I do not see Mayor Stevens name on that list.)
Tickets?  That's absurd.  Anybody who wants to will be able to hear the show from all over town.  I'll be damned if I need a ticket to go into my own town Commons.

Speaking of "The Kids" and unimpressive planning, the elementary school is letting out mere blocks from this event thirty minutes after it starts.

Whoops, that was me.
Uh, hopefully the noise level will not be such that persons trying to vote at Town Hall and the election officials talking to them are able to do their business. If the voters inside Town Hall are hearing amplified endorsements of the next President this could be a problem.

As noted in the Carrboro Citizen, the Town Commons is going to have a busy weekend! A lot of friends from other parts of the Triangle have been asking how they should get there. As far as I know there will NOT be special CH Transit shuttle, but there are everyday free buses that are still on a normal schedule for a few more days.

The CW route goes directly by the Town Hall/Town Commons (map), and the J and F will get you pretty close. The CW also goes to Carrboro Plaza (the strip mall on 54) which is probably your best bet for parking & riding. Of course all three go through downtown Chapel Hill where you can catch buses to any park and ride lot (although some lots require UNC parking passes).

You may also want to reference the whole Chapel Hill Transit system map and the Next Bus site which tell you roughly when the buses will come.

I've been to a lot of events at the Carrboro Town Commons, including the free Squirrel Nut Zippers concert (some 10-ish years ago?) and I have no idea how they will be controlling access to the area. Once again, the show starts at 2pm and the "gates" open at 1pm.
