True support means taking action
At Monday’s Council meeting, citizens from Northside and beyond eloquently described the problems facing their community. I think it’s time for the Council and Town staff to educate the public about the existing tools they have to penalize property owners who fail to follow zoning and NCD statutes. Which staff members will be visiting Northside to physically inspect properties? How much will owners be fined for specific infractions? If these answers are not clear today, how long before they are made available?
Inconveniently, many of the students are out of town on summer break, so policing the “rooming houses” may be difficult until August. But the week that the students move back in would be a great time for some more proactive behavior by the Town.
