Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt invites residents to join him in riding Chapel Hill's fare-free transit system, followed by free coffee and an informal conversation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Starbucks at 103 E. Franklin Street.

The discussion about transportation issues in Chapel Hill will include updates on alternative transportation, including Chapel Hill Transit.

Orange County Public Hearing on 1/4 Cent Sales Tax

HILLSBOROUGH, NC –The Orange County Board of Commissioners will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 during its regularly scheduled meeting at the Southern Human Services Center, 2501 Homestead Road in Chapel Hill.  The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. 

The Public Hearing will provide an opportunity for the public to comment on a potential November 8, 2011 referendum on a one-quarter cent (1/4¢) additional sales tax in Orange County. 

During the 2007 legislative session, the North Carolina General Assembly granted county boards of commissioners the authority to levy, subject to voter approval, an additional one-quarter cent county sales and use tax. 

It is projected the one-quarter cent county sales and use tax would generate approximately $2,500,000 for Orange County on an annual basis.  If the voters approved the referendum on November 8, 2011 implementation would not start until April 1, 2012 generating approximately $625,000 for the remainder of FY 2011-12.

The Town Council will hold a public forum on the issue of food trucks in Chapel Hill at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, in the Council Chamber of Town Hall, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. 
The Town received a citizen's petition to consider permitting and regulating food trucks. The Council invites input into the questions of whether food trucks should be allowed to operate on private property in town and under what restrictions. 
Town zoning regulations are silent on food trucks on private property. Under state regulations, a food truck must operate in conjunction with a permitted restaurant for daily cleaning and servicing, and for solid and liquid waste disposal. 

Residents with an interest in this topic are encouraged to attend the Council meeting of Feb. 28. If you are unable to attend the meeting, ideas and comments about this issue may be sent to Kendal Brown, Town of Chapel Hill planner, at kbrown@townofchapelhill.org or 919-968-2728.
