Kudos to Hillsborough Hog Day for trying to go (almost) garbage-free! I wonder if Chapel Hill would try this for FestiFall?
"Our goal is waste minimization, reducing waste in the first place and composting and recycling as much as we can," said Muriel Williman of Orange County's Solid Waste Management Department and a Hog Day Committee member. "While some trash is expected, we would like to reduce waste by 75-80 percent, even 90 percent. With everyone's help, we can."
Visitors should expect to see vendors serving on paper plates and bowls, or using wax paper to wrap food. Vendors will also be using biodegradable utensils (made from corn, potato or wheat starch) though most people will not even notice the difference. The goal is to be able to compost as much as possible. Any plastic utensils, film, condiment packets or other plastic can contaminate the compost collection.

Hillsborough Mayor to Give State of the Town Address
HILLSBOROUGH — Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens will give a state of the
town address at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Battle Courtroom of the Orange
County Courthouse.
“We want to celebrate the remarkable year that just passed and to
highlight the exciting things we can expect in the coming year,” Stevens
said. “The event will be a great place to get the overview of what’s
happening in ‘Happening Hillsborough’.”
Last year, Stevens discussed the town’s vision. This year, he will
discuss the innovative ways the town is managing resources to align with
that vision.
Poet Laureate Mike Troy will lead the address with a reading of a poem.
Other Town Board members also will be present and will speak briefly.
The courtroom will open at 6:30 p.m. to allow the community to talk with
Town Board members.
Date:
Monday, February 18, 2008 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm
Location:
Battle Courtroom, Orange County Courthouse
Here's a cool idea:
The Hillsborough Police Department has started issuing crime reports by
e-mail, giving a snapshot of the significant reports made in the past
24 or 48 hours.
- News & Observer: "Police post reports of crime by e-mail" 1/9/08
When I lived in Northside, the police sometimes brought a print our of the crimes reported in the area for the last month to our Community Watch meetings. I think more immediate information could be very helpful, especially if we need to be on guard for specific people or recurring problems. On the other hand, some people are already too paranoid as it is...
