Seriously Creative Thinking for County Fund-raising Needed

After last night's defeat of the 1/4 cent sales tax we're really under the gun. A number of important community services could be cut. We could witness the closing of libraries, crippled EMS, county employee layoffs, cuts to school budgets, and more. So what are the Commissioners going to do to fill the budget gaps and invest in the future?

Now is the time for some seriously creative thinking. I know the County Manager, Staff, and Commissioners have been thinking about this hard. But what would you do? How would you raise one time or recurring funds to keep the lights on?

Candidates Website Reviews

I will be posting a review of the candidate's websites for County Commissioner. It is interesting to look at the different campaign websites and see who is internet savy and who is just outdated. A similar project to when Ruby looked at the candidate's different yard signs. After County Commissioner, County School Board and Sheriff candidates will follow. Have you looked at the websites and seen any you specifically like or dislike? Let me know!

Reality Check Report: Guiding Principles for Quality Growth.

This coming Tuesday, the Orange County Commissioners are scheduled to endorse the Reality Check Report: Guiding Principles for Quality Growth. Apparently this was a conference held back in February for visioning the ideal principles of growth in the 15-county local area. The 3 guiding principles adopted by this group are:

  • Transit
  • Vibrant Centers
  • Sustained Greenspace

These are all solid principles, but are they really the top three? What about clean air and water? What about human issues like education?

Does anyone know anything about this process or the groups sponsoring it? The only local name that I recognize is Rosemary Waldorf.

Orange County Property Taxes

I have heard a rumor that Orange County is set to significantly raise property taxes.  Can anyone comment on this?
