GOP wasting $ in OC! Yippee!

According to http://orangencgop.org/, they are creating a permanent home in Daniel Boone Village.  I'm sure Pat McCrory is happy they'll be able to add votes in all counties, but I seriously doubt this'll have an influence on individual races in OC.

CHCCS School superintendent survey

From the school system today, asking for community input on what we want to see in next superintendent.  Survey should be filled out by Dec 15th

As the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools Board of Education works to recruit and hire a new superintendent, board members would like direct input from interested members of the community. Please take a moment to access and complete the survey through the attached link.  This survey will help shape the search and decision-making processes. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions.

New back door for OC spending?

There was a mention of this on CHL the other night; Did anyone else catch this public hearing popping up?

The net net as far as I can tell is that the manager wants to refinance our debt (sounds like a good thing), saving $4.6m over the life of the debt.  And then he proposed $2m in new spending right along with it.

We were told over and over again this past budget cycle that everything had to be cut because there's no money.  Now, instead of balancing all those things which were cut against this new proposal, some glitzy technology thing gets to jump to the front of the line with little public input to gobble up a large portion of savings that are found.

What I really don't understand is how we can cut basic services in the county and then go spend large amount of $ on "nice to have" like a better property info system (I have no idea if the radios are really needed or not).  I've certainly used the current property info system enough to know it isn't the best.  But can we really afford right now to buy a better one?

Another chance at board appointment

Joe Green has resigned from the CHCCS School Board (not that you'll notice that in the lack of media around here)

But I doubt we'll get into another "5th place finisher" fight because I heard MaryAnne Gucciardi moved out of the district as well.  But I'm sure there will be interesting questions about whether to appoint another African-American.  Or why not a Hispanic- or Asian-American given the large populations (14 and 11% respectively)?

Move to Cary?

J. Al Baldwin had an interesting letter in the CH News yesterday -- http://www.chapelhillnews.com/2010/09/12/59402/move-to-cary.html

However, I think he has a couple of points very wrong (and the N&O doesn't allow comments on CHNews stories, so you get my thoughts here. Sorry).

 1)  We're not going back to the "village" that CH was 30 years ago.  While I remember that as a lovely place, the growth of the University and the quality of the schools has caused growth.  The question now is how we change to handle that growth, not how do we stay the same as we were 30 years ago (actually, 33 for me).
