DCHC MPO sets public hearing on rail transit alternatives analysis January 11

from an email:

"The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO) will conduct a public hearing on the rail transit Alternatives Analysis at its board meeting on January 11, 2012.   The meeting will be in the Committee Room on the second floor of Durham City Hall (101 City Hall Plaza, Durham, NC) at 9AM.  Citizens can sign in to request time to speak to the board, called the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC). Citizens can also email their comments to Comments@dchcmpo.org , or post mail them to Andy Henry, Transportation Dept., 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham, NC 27701.  Comments will be accepted up to the time of the public hearing (January 11, 2012).  The TAC will likely vote on a Locally Preferred Alternative for the Durham-Orange county and the Durham-Wake county rail corridors at their subsequent meeting on February 8, 2012.  For additional information, see the DCHC MPO Web page at the following link, (there was no link) or contact Andy Henry, (919) 560-4366, x-36419, or andrew.henry@durhamnc.gov.

As the new guy, how are any of these consensus
building committees accountable to the governed? Thankscw   Weakness is provocative.

Ed Harrison or someone else can correct this, but I believe 8 of the 9 TAC members for the MPO are elected officials appointed by their Governing Boards

too complex to answer in a sentence? if so...should we not fix that?Weakness is provocative.

Oh forgive me  gercohen,I did not see your post original post....I like the way they are elected...but mixed w/ other members from other counties...so they can collectively insulate the home board or themselves...and citizens of one county have no recourse on the actions of a member from another county. I would rather have anyone pushing an agenda affecting Orange as a collective... all be answerable to the citizens of Orange... I do not think that is unreasonable. cw Weakness is provocative.

I don't think so either, per se, but the idea behind MPOs is that the set one policy for an entire metropolitan area so that there is a more cohesive regional strategy for transportation policy and planning. The metropolitan areas are defined by the U.S. Census. Also, another more random question. Maybe I didn't look hard enough but it is hard to understand what they are actually voting on. Is it no-build vs. transportation system management vs. LRT vs. BRT-Low vs. BRT-High?

" the idea behind MPOs is that the set one policy for an entire metropolitan area so that there is a more cohesive regional strategy for transportation policy and planning."....that sounds nice...but how on earth did we do it prior to the colaborative conensuss building tacict drawn up by the UN?District 2 is already  subservient to D1, now we must be as well to this MPO over which we have little recourse. This does not feel like representative democracy.(if anothe similar post pops up I nod to my shaddow to please delete.;) Weakness is provocative.
