Peoples Channel Potluck this Saturday

My name is Shannon O'Neill and I'm the new outreach director at The Peoples Channel. I just wanted to let you know that we are having a potluck this Saturday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM. There will also be a soapbox opportunity, so that members of the community can comment on the service that The Peoples Channel provides. This will help us to learn more about the needs and wants of our community. Please spread the word, as we want as many community members here as possible. If you want more information, please e-mail Chad Johnston at johnston@thepeopleschannel.org. We hope to see you and all your friends there!

Free Plan B

Guest Post by Jennifer Ferris

This Wednesday, Dec. 6, Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina is participating in a national historic effort to prevent unintended pregnancy.

Every visitor to Planned Parenthood's Chapel Hill or Durham clinics will be offered a free pack of Plan B, the emergency contraceptive recently approved by the FDA to be sold without a prescription.

While the significance of this promotion is probably clear to almost any man or woman of childbearing age who has ever relied on a forgettable method of birth control (condoms, the pill, a diaphragm, etc.) to prevent pregnancy, I understand some of you reading might need a little more convincing.

Emergency Contraception (EC) is essential: It prevents pregnancy when used up to five days after unprotected sex. It is currently in use in many emergency rooms and urgent care clinics to help rape victims avoid carrying their predators' children.

Village Project open house

I just got this announcement in the mail. I won't be able to attend, but I would love to support them. The VP has really improved the community dialog around development by doing things like their Concept Plan for Carolina North which gives us something else to react to besides UNC's auto-centric plans and the Town's vague principles.

Pssst, hey Village Project: why isn't this event mentioned on your website?

Chapel Hill speaks out on the Downtown Development Initiative.

The Chapel Town Council has a big meeting tonight. I meant to blog about it in advance, but since I didn't I will start this thread and hope to post live comments as it goes along.

Here's the agenda. I'll stick with this at least through the Public Forum on the Downtown Development Initiative.
