Obama
From the N&O today:
"The roll call Friday was 277-148 by which the House passed a bill to avoid a
Jan. 1 spike in income taxes, renew jobless benefits and cut Social
Security taxes.
A "yes" vote is a vote to pass the measure."
Representative David Price voted 'yes'. Republican Senator Burr voted 'yes.' And of course President Obama will sign it.
Thank you Senator Hagan! on Wednesday in the Senate vote, she voted 'no.'
A summary of the bill from DemocracyNow yesterday:
For those of you who may have missed the announcement in the local press:
Minister Robert Campbell, long-time Chapel Hill activist for Social and Environmental Justice, has been invited to the White House on Friday, Nov. 20th, to speak to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius about issues in the Rogers-Eubanks community related to clean energy and public health.
He has been invited to join this distinguished panel in a White House briefing on the public health benefits of a clean energy economy. This event will bring together public health advocates and community leaders, experts from U.S.agencies, and White House officials for a discussion on the lasting public health benefits of a clean energy economy.
It's happening right now. Today is also national coming out day. And
President Obama gave a speech yesterday on the eve of this event. A
busy weekend for gay rights.
National coming out day "is an internationally-observed civil
awareness day for coming out and discussion about gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues" (wikipedia). And today is also
the day of the National Equality March which comes just as the Hate
Crimes law (Matthew Sheppard Act) is about to be signed into law, and
just before Congressional hearings on repealing DADT are going to take
place.
Last night President Obama gave a speech on the eve of the march at an
HRC event (the largest US lgbt rights org) and discussed many things.
The whole speech was about 25 minutes, but this 6 minute clip of the middle
section of the speech is where he mentions Hate Crimes, inclusive ENDA,
DADT, DOMA, & Immigration/Aids:
